Hi all,
I am new to xp so be gentle...
I keep getting some error messages about a scanner
In my efforts to track it down I ran msconfig and noticed
a scanner is loaded at start up

How do I permanetly delete any reference to this scanner from my start up
file??

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi Mac,

In the Location column under the Startup tab in msconfig, it should show
display from whence the program is starting (eg.,
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run key in the
registry).....navigate to this folder on the hard drive or in the registry
and delete the value that is associated with the scanner.

Regards,

Thanks Patti

While this should clear my problem it will not stop XP for looking for it at
startup.

Is there any way to edit the ? startup file directly

Where does it say it loading from?

What is the error message you are receiving re the scanner and is there
software for the scanner still loaded on the computer.

btw, I am assuming that you don't currently have a scanner hooked up to the
computer.

Mac,
To remove it from the Start Menu (if that is where it is starting from),
right click the XP "Start" Icon (the yellow one at the bottom on the left
side). Click "Explore" on the Menu; then find the shortcut, right click it
and choose "Delete". If you do not use the Scanner, un-install the software
via the Control Panel.

It should be obvious that I am not sure what I am doing here.

msconfig, advanced tab, indicates there is an hp scanner that I do not have
as a startup item.
File location is common startup.

What I think I am asking is "How do I delete this as a startup item"? or
perhaps I should not care. I traced the file to an HP directory, it is an
executable.

Kind of strange, I had my disk reformatted and installed XP on friday.

Not really, Mac, as you seem to be doing pretty good.......you know how to
go to msconfig and then the startup tab, that's more than a lot of people
know to do <g>

Look for a shortcut to the HP executable in:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
and
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
If a shortcut exists in either location, delete the shortcut.

Yes, it does seem odd that you would have the HP software installed if you
had the computer reformatted and just had XP installed.....however, if this
was done from a Recovery CD or partition provided by the computer
manufacturer, it may have loaded a drive image that included the HP software
for a scanner. As Gene said, look for an entry for the HP scanner software
in Add/Remove Programs applet in Control Panel and opt to Remove the
software.

Outstanding! Problem solved

Ironically, I went to control panel and the software does not appear to be
installed.

In any event, the start up item no longer appears in the system
configuration utility. Hopefully, the annoying messages no longer have a
cause to display.

Many thanks to all.
