Hi:

I have a Sony desktop VGC-RA716G with Windows MCE2005 and now it has
started to hang up on startup sometimes. It hangs when the icons are loading
and leaves the Taskbar somewhat enlarged, but blank.

Any ideas or suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Col Tom

No that is not the case, as I have NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Display Adapter,
NVIDIA Desktop Explorer version 6.14.10.4666 and have not ran any updates.

I wonder if I disable either NVIDIA Desktop Explorer Shell Folder or
NVIDIA Desktop Menu System if that would correct this problem?

Thanks,

Col Tom

I'd perhaps try, any or all of;
1) Enable boot loging then check the log
2) Check Event Viewer for any indication
3) Check if it occurs in safe mode, if not probably a driver is hanging

Hi:

I went into Safemode and enabled Boot Logging and ran it; however, when I
searched for the log file "ntbootlog.txt" my computer does not find
anything.

Any idea what or where the log file is? Is the file by another name?

Thanks,

Col Tom

Hi:

I finally found the file under ntbtlog.txt instead of ntbootlog.txt.
Following is a copy of the log which indicates apparently a lot of drivers
did not load. For the ones (8) that did not load what do I do now?

Do you have installed/use any Symantec Norton home products ?
It's very common for uninstall to leave behind or orphan a number
of services and drivers which appears in your listing.

Yes I use Norton System Works 2006 and have installed and reinstalled, but
when I have done so I also ran their NortonRemovalTool after uninstalling
and prior to new install.

I made an error on the number being (8), as after printing the log out it
was (14) plus two questionable log events.

I have to leave now for about an hour to take a friend to pick up his car
being repaired, but will return ASAP.

Thanks,

Col Tom

Do you have System Works 2006 currently installed ? If not, then
you need to remove the Norton remnants in the Services map &
Non Plug-&-Play drivers category. The process rates about a 6
on the 1-10 "PC Self-Support, Shoot yourself in the foot scale".

I suggest use this MS tool to remove Systems Works 2006 and any remnants
from the registry.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

Reboot the system and if it works as you expect, try re-installing
Systems works 2006. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE CD FOR SYSTEMS WORKS 2006
before using the MS tool. Please don't go online unless you have
re-installed the anti-virus!!

Hi:

Yes I still have NSW 2006 installed on my Sony that the Boot Log applied
too. I have a Toshiba laptop that has had NSW2006 installed on it and I
uninstalled it and ran the NortonRemovalTool and I currently have AVG
installed in lieu of Norton.

I ran Enable Boot Logging on the Toshiba and got basically the same
drivers not loading as I got on my Sony desktop with the exception that none
of the Norton drivers not loading were listed. So are the ones not loading
on both computers basically a common occurrence?

I have had Norton NSW2006 installed for almost a year now and never had
the current problem as originally described.
I know that Norton can and does cause lots of problems and I suppose that I
could completely uninstall it and install AVG and see if it resolves the
problem. What are your recommendations?

Thanks,

Col Tom

Later versions ( 2006/2007 ) uninstall more cleanly than earlier versions
of System Works/NIS. It's interesting you post about Symantec, I'm
right now testing their NAV 2008 product. Still no final verdict, but it
seems like they've actually attempted to improve some of the notorious
features ( system loading/Scan times/excessive Services ).

Removing it is probably a good idea, as machine performance should
improve without it installed.

Hi:

The only Norton that did not load from the boot log was "Did not load
driver \??\C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton
AntiVirus\SAVRTPEL.SYS".

I just sent an email to their Tech Support function asking them for
resolution to this problem. I will post their response accordingly when
received. They had a similar problem with this same driver loading in past
applications that I read on the internet.

Thanks again for all your support and postings!

Col Tom

Hi Thomas,

Thank you for contacting Symantec Online Technical Support.

I understand that you are receiving an error related to Norton file when you
run Boot logging.

Thomas, this issue can occur when the Boot logging program was unable to
load the Norton file. When you start Windows Norton program files loaded
into memory, may be the file was in use and was unable to load.

There is no such known issue as you are facing, I suggest you to contact
your system vendor and check with the issue. This message does not mean that
Norton programs are in error.

If you have any concerns and queries with the Norton programs please do not
hesitate to contact us.

Best regards,

This same driver not loading has been a problem in past Norton versions
and apparently is still a problem whether Norton wants to admiut it or not.
My computer sometimes hangs on boot up when icons are loading and will not
completely boot up.

Recommend that you look further into this issue. My subscription to Norton

for another anti-virus program if this issue is not resolved by then.

It's typical/clueless techno-babble from an obviously unqualified Tech
Support "Agent" that Symantec hired from a support clearing house.
You're more likely to hit the Powerball number than get useful info
from these outsourced support operations.

It's just another reason to move away from a program that requires
all this post install aggravation to get it to work or work properly.
