Is it possible to remove startup files from the startup
tab in system configuration utility?

you could remove all of them, but it's better to disable
the startup from within the programs. Most Programs give
you an option in the preferences to load on startup or not.
2nd...go to start/programs and delete the entry's in the
Autostart pop-out if any.

Rory,

These programs are loaded in the following part of the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

If you don't want to edit the registry manually, your best option is to uncheck the items from the Startup listings and download the script from Kelly's site which clears the disabled items from the Startup lists.

See Tip 148 in MVP Kelly's site: Clear Disabled Items from Msconfig Startup
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

NOTE: The disabled startup items are moved here:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg]
