startup files

When I had win98 there was msconfig so I could get rid of any unwanted
startup files, but how do you do it in win2000 pro? I have some very strange
files listed there like svchost.exe, lsass.exe, smss.exe, csrss.exe .

Those you listed are CRITICAL to the continued functioning of your
computer. Kill only if you have a real understanding of what these files
are (google 'em), and you are troubleshooting something specific, and you
have a backup, and don't mind spending hours restoring.

That said, you can download the xp version of msconfig (which works fine
on 2000) here:
