I'm running XP Home and scanned the Windows directory for
wump.* and found nothing. Also checked Task Manager with
same result. I'm assuming this is aftermarket software
(or it's something in XP Pro). If it's aftermarket
software perhaps they could help.

Do you updated and run your anti-virus program weekly?

Search for Ad Aware and SpyBot on Google. Both freeware.
Update and run daily.

Wump.exe is going to be in C:\windows\system32. I had the same problem
you did and haven't entirely rectified it, but you can kill wump.exe
from the above folder and you should be ok. Additionally, check on
the add/remove programs folder for media player. About the same time
I started having the shutdown problem I noticed that the media player
icon showed up on the quick launch pad (next to the start button) when
it hadn't been there before. I checked add/remove programs and listed
next to the media player icon was the name viewpoint media player
instead of windows media player. Don't know if it was related to the
wump bug, but I started getting media player problems, dsl problems,
and shutdown problems all at the same time. I got rid of wump and now
the system is operating normally.

The Wump.exe command located in the startup group in msconfig seems to
act very similiar to a Trojan virus commonly known as msblast with one
big difference.

You don't have to be on the internet for it to shutdown the RPC
service.
This service is part of the NT Operating systems Windows XP,Windows NT
and Windows 2000.

To remove this file from the computer boot to safemode delete the
file located in the windows system32 directory and delete the registry
entry from the startup group.

Not sure if it's a virus it sure acts like one though.
