Starts more and more frequently in safemode

A month or so ago my computer started in safe mode. I restarted it and it
didn't so it again for a while, but increasingly it starts in safe mode and
today it took four restarts and then I tried the "reset" button for it to
start normally.
I have problems with Zonealarm not initiating (SBC's chosen software so I'm
reluctant to change it and have conflicts with servers software)...but that
is the only program that seems to have any problems other wise. I clean
regularly and defrag, plenty of room on disc......... can't figure out what
is going on here....suggestions? (aside from doing regular back ups)

The fact that this is getting worse indicates to me that the culprit is
probably failing hardware. Of course, I can't be sure since I can't see
your computer but I'd start with hardware troubleshooting.

Testing hardware failures often involves swapping out suspected parts
with known-good parts. If you can't do the testing yourself and/or are
uncomfortable opening your computer, take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of BigStoreUSA). Have
all your data backed up before you take the machine into a shop.

Thank you, Sigh, After yesterdays crisis, this morning it started fine,
everything runs beautifully.
I had somone out last month, he told me there was nothing wrong. It wasn't
starting in safe mode then, was making funny sounds and running jerky. He
sprayed canned air into the fans, ran a few things and told me it was OK, it
behaved well for him. Two weeks later excel and Printshop started acting
funny and the noise (not as loud) returned but not the jerkiness. Today it is
quiet and started up perfectly.
I'm so confused. If it starts in safemode again I'll take it to the guy who
put it together for me. Hate to do that, it takes him weeks and I'm so busy
now.
