I had this game years ago on floppy discs and my son loved it.

It saw it on CD on e-bay and thought ...it'a not a lot of money, it will be
a bit better than the version we had and it will be a bit of a blast from
the past for him!

I have a fairly new PC and run XP Home edition but I can't get the game to
instal at all. Is there anyway to instal it onto my PC or is the XP Home
edition just too different to allow me to load what I know is a very, very
old game?

Grateful for any advice.

Gerry.

Hi Gerald,

Try installing and playing that using 95/98 Compatibility mode.

To install a program using Windows XP's Compatibility Mode, hold
down SHIFT as you insert the game CD, use My Computer to browse
to the setup program, and then skip down to step 1 in the list below:

To run an installed program using Windows XP's Compatibility Mode,
first right click the program and "Send To..." / Desktop (create shortcut).

1.. Right click on the shortcut to the program.
2.. Click on Properties.
3.. Click on the Compatibility tab.
4.. Click on Run this program in compatibility mode and select one of these:
a.. Windows 95
b.. Windows 98
c.. Windows NT 4
d.. Windows 2000
5.. Under Display settings, check mark the mode that you think that is best:
a.. Run in 256 colors.
b.. Run in 640 X 480 screen resolution.
c.. Disable visual themes.

Click on Apply.Click on Ok.Double click on the program.

Of course, let's not forget to check for any patches or updates for that game.
A good place to find them is: www.avault.com/pcrl/patches_list.asp?letter=a

If you'd like to learn more information about compatibility mode, you can click the

Thank you for your suggestion. I have tried it a few times now without
success.

While holding down SHIFT and inserting the CD should there be some sort of
dislay on the screen? I don't see anything. This Keyboard does not have a
key marked SHIFT so I am using the key marked with an upwards arrow (there
are 2 such keys on the keyboard). I have tried holding one or both keys down
either until the D drive light goes out or until I reach the final error
message.

At MY COMPUTER I used search to find the SETUP programme from the CD.

I have tried both WIN95 and WIN98 along with a combination of the display
options.

The erro message displayed in a message box headed 16 BIT MS-DOS SUBSYSTEM

the actual message is :-

"D: \TREKCD\SETUP.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT.
The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and microsoft windows
application
choose 'close' to terminate the application"

As this is the same message I got when I first tried to install the game
using WIN XP I am totally stumped!

Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

Now why didn't you say so in the beginning? ;-) Go to c:\windows\repair
and copy/paste the file (autoexec.nt) into your c:\windows\system32
folder. That should do the trick (thanks Jimmy, picked that up from you
quite a while ago).

Thanks guys. I got it up and running. The sound is a bit ropey and the
graphics are exactly the same..but what do you expect from a very old game.

Thanks again!
