what kind of computer are you on? I think your friend is referring to a
reformat where you wipe out your harddrive and perform a fresh install of XP.

If so do a search for "reformat" and you will find tons of posts on the
topic, beware when you reformat you lose all pictures, programs, music, etc
that you had on the computer so back up what you want to keep

I think System Restore points are only kept for three months or so.

They are kept for as long as there is room for them in the space you've
allocated, up to a maximum of 90 days.

But I think Pat didn't want to do a System Restore, but to do a clean
reinstallation of Windows.

More information is needed.............Did you buy system with XP
pre-installed?? did you receive a CD or is there a "restore partition".
Your manual that came with the system usually explains these things in
detail.
Just remember that by going back(restoring) to when you first received the
system all of your files and work will be erased and you should back up what
you want to save. Also any programs that you have installed since then will
be gone and will need to be reinstalled.......do you have the CD's??

On the other hand if you explain your specific problem (why you wish to
"restore) maybe someone here will have a less drastic solution
