Starting Service Fails on Win2000 SP4

I have installed WD on several machines now and I am aware of the GDI+ and
done that just fine. However, on one Win2000 machine, the service fails to
load. I have reinstalled and rebooted, but Windows Defender will not load.
It tells me there is a problem and suggests I reinstall or reboot. Any
suggestions. That's it; no other error message.

There's a dependency on Com+, but I'd think that would get you a clear
message that a dependency service was missing.

You might run services.msc and check the tabs for the windows defender
service and see if you can spot anything that it depends on that is set to
disabled.

Checking the system event logs to see if there's more useful info in the log
messages there might be worthwhile, too.

Thanks; I will check it again. I just saw that WD requires IE 6; is it
possible this machine with Win2000 has IE 5? I will check it on Wednesday
when I go back to the Library. I would think it would tell me.

Not sure on the IE5 vs IE6 question--haven't hit an IE5 machine to see what
happens--I'm sure I would forget to notice that, so I sure hope the
installer would say something.

And on Windows 2000 you don't have the SC command which is useful for
getting more info about what is happening with a given service.

Trying starting the service within services.msc and seeing whether it gives
any clearer error message is about all I can think of.

Hi, I have posted the error 0x80040154 when updating, which no one has
repleied to yet.

I tried to install it on 2 more computers and they had the problem listed
below by SteveC.

The error he is talking about is Error 0x800106ba. I am installing with an
adminstrator account. IE is version 6, Windows 2000 SP4 fully updated!!

In the event viewer I have Event ID 7023 from Service Control Manager saying
- The Windows Defender Service service terminated with the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

PLEASE HELP...this is two systems already, 2 systems worked, 1 system cannot
update all same software & updates installed!!

I have the same error Error 0x800106ba and tried to run it manually with the
command "net start windefend". I got the following answer:
The Windows Defender Service is starting
The Windows Defender Service could not be started.
A system error has occured.
System error 265 has occured
The system cannot find message text for message number 0x109 in the message
file for BASE.

Any idea of what I shall do ?

The event log also said "A certificate chain processed correctly, but
terminated in a root certificate which is not trusted by the trust provider"

Thanks for you help.

I'm afraid that your message BrunoT and clikarbar's error are both ones I
not only don't have a clue about, I'm not at all sure what "might" work--so
I'm trying to sit on my hands. Posting with the specifics of the error
message in a new thread--rather than just saying "I have the same
problem--when the detailed message number is different--may be more likely
to attract one of the Microsoft posters who have the background to deal with
the specific messages.

I tried to start the service from services.msc; it says that the file cannot
be found. The file is \programfiles\windows_defender\MsMpEng.exe. When I
go to the folder, it is there; I execute it and the harddisk grinds, then
nothing. I start Windows Defender and get the same error message again it
started with.

I'm still in the dark about the root cause here.
that message is strange. MsMpEng,exe is the windows defender service's
executable.

It seems as though perhaps the installation was incomplete in some way, or
that there is a permissions issue. Was the initial installation of Windows
Defender done by an administrator?

Yes, administrator privileges. I downloaded the latest version of
WinInstaller and will update everything, uninstall WD and try again
tomorrow. Libary is closing. LOL

WEll, still no go, so I uninstalled it. I wonder if there isn't enough RAM
(64meg) as I noticed that today. But again, shouldn't I get a message?
