We Live For The One We Die For The One

Iam going to off switches onto my vantec Nexus fan controler so i can
turn off some fans when not needed quiet down thepc.

From what i j=have read most fans start in 7volt and then rpm up or
did a read this wrong.

I just dont want to blow my fans up turning them on in 12volt mode to
many times.

If you know the answer please do my project awaits.

Thanks.

A 12 volt fan will start OK with 12 volts. Fans started and ran exclusively with 12 volts until someone decided that reducing noise was for important that keeping things cool.

Perhaps you just need some lower RPM fans... low RPM fans on a fan
controller can be adjusted to run at even lower RPM and be inaudible,
there isn't any good reason to have fans then disable them... fans should
be stategically placed to provide balanced airflow and shutting off some
instead of a balanced speed reduction will alter that airflow balance.

yes/no/maybe

7V is generally a safe and generic answer. Median speed fans may spin up
at closer to 5V, low speed or very high speed typically need closer to 6V,
and some very large/thick industrial types (typically at least 120mm) may
need even 8-9V and be very rough running until 10V.

Most of the largest fan manufacturers provide spec sheets for operating
voltage. Often the fans will run at even ~ 10% lower than minimal spec
provided but if noise is that much of an issue at lowest spec'd voltage
then you might want to consider a lower RPM model.

That's not an issue. If they are meant to run on 12V they can be turned
on at 12V for more cycles than you'd ever be able to practically do so.
The main issue is that they draw more current at initial spin up, so even
if a fan can run at 6V (for example) that doesn't necessarily mean it can
START at 6V... when adjusting fan voltage always test that the selected
voltage will start the fan, not just keep it spinning after it was started
at a higher voltage.

All i needed to knowmy four knobs on my Vantec Nexus will now have
four swtiches in the drie bay above it :)
