so many programs automatically run at start up. how can
i see and choose what to fire up and what not to when i
start the computer?

START|RUN "msconfig"|START UP lists many of them.

The first place to disable them is within a program's options itself. If
that's not available, look to the Start Up directories (folders) in XP and
remove shortcuts there.

If neither of those approaches works, then UNcheck the msconfig entry for
the program.

go to start, then run, type msconfig, select start up tab
and choose what not to start up by unchecking the box. do
not uncheck items that run your system. in most cases you
will have to restart. when you do a box comes up. check
do not show this again and your system will remain as you
set it.
 
Why install third-party apps to duplicate existing functionality - its just
plain DUMB! - the chances are you will only introduce problems, you
certainly won't solve any.

MSconfig is there to do just this.
