One of our clients want to customize all their staff
logon screens, to display a disclaimer. However, I have
tried the following....

In Regedit
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop

Then changing the "wallpaper" to the disclaimer saved
document, this works, however it goes past so quickly
that it is not humanly possible to read it. Is there
anyway of slowing it down, or having a force logon, with
this disclaimer visible??

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Another buch of wanker lawyers. You can set a log on message in Local Security Policy. A feature just for wanker lawyers.

Be nice, David. :o)

I am a she and it in fact has NOTHING to do with
Lawyers...your comment was in fact not very helpful,
considering I have NO idea where "Local Security Policy"
is!!!

Hi Wes...

I tried the bit in interactive logon...but that did some
very strange thing...no message came up, but what it did
was created a new user...have no idea how or why that
happened....I am the administrator, so surely it should
have worked when logged in under my name? It clearly
didn't bring up the test message, and just created a new
user.....any ideas here?

Thanks Shaz

But if you type it in help you be told. And there is a lot of help. I typed it in help before replying to make sure (and so I could cut and paste my answer to ensure I get the exact terminolgy and spelling). I also started it and made sure it hadn't run away while I wasn't looking.

I mean you are talking like you are an IT person. Firms don't normally employ a doctor or a plumber as a consultant to set up computers (after they talk to their lawyer, who after all are called solicitors where I live).

So type
Local security policy
in help. If you add Logon message as well it becomes less tutorial and pretty exact.

Sorry...my fault...I don't really know my way around XP
too well and that is why, to be honest, had never heard
of local security policy, but do now! Thanks for that. I
have actually tried it, but it never seemed to work, I
don't know where I went wrong, but when I did as I
thought I should, in Local security...it actually created
a new user, with the same name, but never added any pop
up screen. I have managed to do something through
regedit, but do you know if there is a way of changing
the "ok" button to say "I accept" ~ Really annoying! I
know what you mean....it is just a company wanting to
watch their backs!

If you know how to do that, please let me know. Thanks :-

Well, I was convinced I had done something wrong...so I
redid everything and rebooted and all it does is creates
a new user...it certainly does not show any form of
disclaimer that I have tried to add! regedit seems to
work best.

I can't see how a new user woukd appear. What exactly did you do. Who/What is the user. Do you use the welcome screen or are they connected to a domain.

Hi Wes

BIG StUfF up!!! I tried doing what you suggested, but it
went horribly wrong! I am not sure what I did wrong, but
followed your procedure....that is when my new user was
created! I don't know how it is related either, but as
soon as I tried what you suggested, I rebooted and a new
account was activated...the reason I know this, is that it
automatically went into this new account! It had
different wallpaper and not all my usual desktop icons
were there!

The new users name was shaz, the old users name was shaz
too! I don't know how that is possible, but that is what
it was!

I have not downloaded any windows updates, since loading
my machine in January!

The ASP.NET accounts are both Shaz....still not sure how
this is possible, but it happened!!

Now I have stuffed up totally and deleted the wrong Shaz,
which has had rippling effects...in that now no one can
print, as my machine has the priner on it....any ideas
with that??!!

Shaz;

No, you did *not* follow my procedure.

Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local
Policies\Security Options\
Interactive logon: Message text for users attempting to log on

To create a new user you have to:
Computer Management\System Tools\Local Users and Groups\Users
Or
Console1\Console Root\\Local Users and Groups\Users
Or
Start | Settings | Control Panel | User Accounts

[[A user name cannot be identical to any other user or group name on the
computer being administered.]]

To create a new user you have to right click Users | Create New User | Fill
in the blanks | Create button | Close button
Or
Highlight Users | Action | New Users | Create New User | Fill in the blanks
| Create button | Close button

This is *not* a one click mistake.
It takes too many steps.
There cannot be two shaz accounts.

I suggest that you look at System Restore.

Hi Wes,

I know I might sound dumb...but my oath to God I did
follow your instructions...I know that creating a user in
*very* different from what I wanted to accomplish,
however I have just double checked now and I definately
did follow your procedure!

Actually....maybe I haven't! I don't know where Computer
Configuration is! This is *exactly* what I have done:

Start
Settings
Control Panel
Administrative Tools
Local Security Policy
Security settings --> Local policies --> Security Options
Double clicked on Interactive logon: Message text for
users attempting to log on

When I double clicked, it brought up a box, where I could
type my test message, which I duly did...pressed apply, ok

And rebooted......

Came up with an exact same username as I was logged in
as, except with the standard settings for the computer,
not my orignal username settings!!!

Where did I go wrong??

I haven't responded because I have no !@#$!#$ idea what you did.
And appearently David doesn't either and he's about thirty times
smarter than I am.

Did you get your printer shared?

I don't know much about networking, but it seems odd to me that you have 50
computers and no network printer.

I just tried it. I had to reboot twice because I wanted to see the message
again before I did away with it. You have to click the OK button. Slows
down my bootup.

Local Computer Policy\Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security
Settings\Local Policies\Security Options\
Interactive Logon: Message title for users attempting to logon
and
Interactive Logon: Message text for users attempting to logon

It works for me. I saw the message text and title. And I had to click
the OK button to continue booting to my Desktop.

I still have no idea what you did. :-(

I think I know what happened. But not how.

I also find it wierd there is no domain (if there's a welcome screen then there is no domain). But it may be a novel network.

Wgen a profile is unavailable for a reason windows creates a new one. That seems to have happened here.

But we really need to know how the network is configured. Because windows works differently depending on it.

I have this thought. That you were on a domain but no longer. But we need to know the network cfg.
