Start>Run>Type in "msconfig" (without the quotes)>OK>Start Tab. Uncheck what
you wish, but make sure you leave anything associated with your anti-virus
checked.

Also

Go to start>run and type regedi

when the editor pops up look under hkey local machine > software > microsoft > windows > current version > ru

you will see several entries her

also to be safe check under run once, run as service etc...

also look under hkey current user ... .... .... .... .... ... ..
and hkey users then the different user
and hkey current confi

virus writers will hide their programs startups in the registry under different things so it's best to check on these keys once in a while and delete the ones you know aren't something you want running. also things like real player and quicktime and packet writing cd software etc.... get loaded at startup under these and you don't need most of them and all they do is eat up resources so you could probably remove most of them as well if they aren't programs that rely on being run (the packet/udf cd writing utils do) such as real player.
