Is there a way to configure the computer to start using the spacebar?

An old laptop of mine would return from standby *only* if the spacebar was
pressed but starting (powering the unit on) required using the on/off
button.

I have a computer at my house and when I want to turn the computer on, all I
have to do is hit the spacebar. I configured the computer to do it, but I
did it so long ago the I forgot how I did it the first time. I work in the
IT department at my college and I'm trying to configure the computers because
I turn them off and on allot and I would like to conserve the button because
the wair after time.

Hi

It's a good idea, but I don't how to do it. The keyboard is 'hard wired'
and would therefore need perhaps need a 3rd party program to achieve this.
Otherwise a little piece of assembler coding may do it.

some models of HP computers allow this. From memory it is in the cmos
settings.

check your cmos setting to see if that option to start your computer by
press the spacebar is available. To get ino the cmos configuration most
computer require you to press the del or F1 button during starup / post test
process.
