Hi, I would like to know which files get open on start up? How do I tell
Windows XP Pro to either give me a list of files openned or may be better,
stop at each file?

Thanks

run msconfig

then lok in the startup tab

I did run msconfig, and unselected everything (exept the boot.ini). I have
a file that gets activated which result in an icon in the systray saying
Critical System Error!; while in fact it is a malware. I manage removing
most of it but there is still that file opening at starting xp but I need to
know which one.

Use msconfig (Start/run/msconfig) or
Try Autoruns from SysInternals:
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html
This will show all apps/etc. that load/run when you first boot and
selectively allow you to stop any that you don't want.

Note: You may need to highlight an item (right click) and use the Google
option on some entries to get the details for more obscure items in the
list.

You aren't going to be able to get rid of this malware by simply using
msconfig. You need to really clean up your machine.

You haven't given much to go on, but my guess is that you have some sort
of Smitfraud trojan variant. Go through the preparatory steps here:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Then do the specific steps here:

I would go through the rest of the general removal steps in the first
link, including all the finishing work.

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA).

Just yesterday I fixed a badly infected machine by using Spybot Search and
Destroy...
it was easy to use...and the machine works geat now!

How excellent for you. If just running Spybot worked on that machine,
wonderful. However, using msconfig as you first suggested will not
remove malware.

Correct!
Malware does not always appear in startup.

Out of the 20 or so malwares that I cleaned up yesterday...
only one of them appeared in startup

Start; Run; enter
tasklist /svc

It'll give you a listing including what started the process. Pretty useful.
