I'm trying to figure out which of my start-up programs
are really necessary, but its tough to tell just what is
what. Its a bunch of greek to me. Help?

Here's a quick list:

realsched
SYNtpenh
LMPDSRPv
EM_exec
tfswctrl
atiptaxx
Ati2mdxx
iTunesHelper
Adobe Gamma Loader
Microsoft Office

Well, most of it is greek to me too. But I think I can
help with some of it: "atiptaxx" is you display device's
software (you need it), "Ati2mdxx" is a sister program
to "atiptaxx" (you might not need it), Microsoft Office
is a prog. that probably isn't necessary, "realsched" is
either a scheduling program or program for a RealOne
player.(both may no be essential) Info on the rest can
be found by searching for that program by going to
Start/Search/For Files
and Folders\ and typing in the program name with a ".exe"
extension.
Sorry I can't help anymore.

I would remove these from startup:
A. Microsoft Office [unless you use Word, Excel, etc, constantly, let them
load only when you need them].
B. Adobe Gamma Loader [whatever it does].
C. iTunesHelper.
D. RealScheduler.
Some of these are processes, not actual programs. The only thing I recognize
as an actual set of programs is the Microsoft Office Suite. To find out more
about processes and services, go here: http://www.blackviper.com/ .
In my opinion, the only programs really necessary to startup with your
operating system are an updated Anti-Virus program and a good Firewall. The
rest you can load when you need them.
