I have xp home edition. All was well till the other day I tried booting up
(not this pc,a Dell 4600)and all it would do was make a whirring sound(not
constant but like reving your car up and down)and the monitor wouldn't turn
on.
I took it to Best Buy.They took out the hard drive and tested it. They said
something about sectors unfamiliar or something like that ,like it was
infected or something. Anyway. They said formating and reinstalling xp would
fix it.
Does this sound right? Or am I going to do this and find out it was
something else? As you can probably tell,I'm not a techy(spell).
Anybody got any clues?I constantly update my anti-virus program and double
scan my attachments,so I can't see how anything could have infected my pc.

It is hard to say without seeing the machine, but noises and not booting
into Windows usually means hardware failure. Software solutions
(reinstalling Windows) for hardware problems are useless.

Take your machine to a professional computer repair shop, not your local
version of BigStoreUSA (like BestBuy for ex.).
