I have just got rid of some malicious spyware and repaired windows XP but now
when i log on to any of 4 accounts all i get is a flash of the desktop and
then a message saying saving your settings and logging off. this then returns
to the welcome screen. I have tried ctrl alt del but the result is the same
so is safe mode or any other option using the f8 key. can anyone please help.

You may try to replace the
c:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe
from
c:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\winlogon.exe

Before you replace, please do a backup .

Hope helps.

Hi,
Only want to do reinstall as a last resort,
any other suggestions please.

It's that time.

Maybe now you can see the value of keeping system backups so when
something like this happens you don't have to start
from scratch and reinstall everything.

If I had your problem, I'd have been up and running problem-free in 5
minutes by booting to a known good clone on a spare drive that is
installed in a removable caddy.

OR I could restore my system drive from Acronis True Image backups in
about an hour.

you are not alone i have the same problem

Hello DD:

It's not good form to yell at those who might help you with all caps.

It's also considered poor form to steal another's posting. Your
circumstances are almost always different from the OP.

Please start a new thread and post as much detail as you're able. i.e.
What is the complete & exact version of XP. What malware did you
discover? What antimalware did you run to cleanse your system? What
are your symptoms now?

Please post all this information, and more, in a new thread.

Thank you,

Pete
