Just installed Win 2000 and whenever I cold boot I get a
message unable to boot from disk. "please insert a boot
disk." I then reboot "Ctrl alt del" and the system comes
up normal. any idea's installed on a new drive on an old
dell system

Probably, your hard disk isn't fully initialized when POST is executed.
Check your BIOS for any option that might delay POST, for instance an
extended memory test, in order to get your disk subsystem the time needed
to initialize fully before the disk is being accessed.
