WhenI fireup my computer with xp pro I get the following three
options:
1. Press "R" for standard recovery options
2. Press "F" to format hard drive
3. Press "Q" to quit

I have tried "R" and am told that this can't be done beucase the
system is missing "hive" security etc....
I don't want to do "F" becuase I don't want to format a 160GB hard
drive and lose all my applicaitons, files, etc.
So I choose "Q" and the system boots up and runs

Can I reinstall XP Pro to replace the missing file and get things back
to normal or is there another alternative?

Thanks for your help in advance

Bob;

Can you boot from the hard drive?

Without the XP CD in your CD drive?

Take the CD out and try booting.

I can get xp pro to run but everytime I shut down and restart the
computer I have to select the "Q" option to get the system to run.

Thanks for your interest. I was thinking that perhaps the best
solution would be to reinstall the XP Pro upgrade cd and see if it
would replace the missing security file. What do you think of this
option?

Bob;

I don't know for sure. Your data is the thing.
You probably already know this, but after you
get everything fixed, Backup, back up, backup.
I only say this because I have lost data I did not
care to lose. I just reformatted and again there
were things I should've backed up. That said. :o)

Is this the error?

I think the statement above may be key here.
I would try this before a re-install.

Read over the page at the link. There are a bunch of other
links listed. Print 'em out. I did a while back, just in case.

I just re-read your last post. When you get it running backup everything
you can think of. If you can backup, then maybe a reinstall might be a good
idea. XP has enough screwed up stuff, no sense trying to duct tape it.
Don't shut down the machine until you backup. Then think about it awhile.

From experience, there will be something you'll overlook. :o)

If you try to install XP on top of XP this may cause other problems.
Read over the info @ the 307545 link and think about which option
(Fix or re-install) might be less hassle.

Post back.

Mr Vogel:
Thanks so much for your ideas and support. I am now able to start XP
and work on the computer without problems. Your advice on backing up
is so true. When I shut off the computer I am able to get xp to fire
up and get to my desktop and applications. I still have the same
three options I spoke of before. I will check out the site you
forwarded to me.

Thanks again.
