I have had to fix some problems recently, but having suceeded, I now find
that when I start the PC, I am sent to a B&W screen which asks me which OS I
want to use. This does take me to the Colour Log On screen, ....
But How do I go back to the good old days..when Start Up takes me straight
to User Log In?

Hello,

You need to edit the boot.ini.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/289022
(How to edit the Boot.ini file in Windows XP)

See the section on the following
1. Edit the Boot.ini File

Once you are in the notepad window, change timeout to 0. Save and exit. Do
not make changes that you are unsure of - incorrect changes can cause your
system to not boot up!

**ignore this paragraph if the menu gives only one operating system as the
choice*
Note that the above assumes that the menu is already pre-selecting the
correct line for you when you startup your PC. If not, you will need to
change the default value to the operating system that matches the one you
use.

What exactly you done, did you perform a repair/install and you Daul boot
the operating system with another copy or what exactly?.
Can you log into safe mode or any of the choices you given on the B&W?.
If you do and you have two operating system if I'm guessing right try this:
When logged in Right click " My Computer" Icon and select properties from
the drop down list.
Click on Advanced Tab then click on Settings Button under StartUp and
Recovery, then click on Edit and see what Line of operating system you want
to select, the final product should look like this:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

Note: Please don't perform the above if you are in doubt about it or it
doesn't describe your issue and write back with more Info.

Hi

I repaired my corrupted Print Spooler, this entailed me downloading from my
XP Disk and also some msconfig stuff in the Run menu. (I'm an Amateur!!)

My System, Advanced, Start Up currently says:

Defualt Op system """"
and the settings say
[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS=""
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home

Hi
And thanks for your help.
Let me explain more clearly:

When I start up and come to the B&W window, there is ONLY ONE Option.
"Windows XP Home Edition."
When I click on it, it takes me to the Normal Colour Log in Page...and then
all goes normally.

In the My Computer, Advanced Options: The Options for my Operating System
are:

""""
and
="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
HTH.

Should I adjust to the "Microsoft Windows ......." one?

Hi Bilko,
You have a blank Entry in the Boot.ini this why you get the Black and White
Multi Boot up OS selection, since in this Line nothing and black it doesn't
make any sense for the bootloader and give you this horrible black&white
screen.
So, by removing this BLANK Line hopefully your issue will be resolved.

Remove this = """" from the Boot.ini file and click safe and Reboot and
this time hopefully you will get to the login screen instead of the OS
selection window.
