Can anyone recommend a start-up manager for Windows XP? I can't the XP
utility similar to the windows 98 configuration manager which allows the
user to turn off registry keys which load programs on start-up.

System Security Suite (http://www.igorshpak.net/) has such feature, though
is is more of an added bonus. I'm sure there are others out there who will
have more oprions, be more userfriendely, ect... but this one does it for
me, along with cleaning up systemfiles

Try Mike Lin's "Start-up Control Panel" - highly recommended -

(I find his StartUp Monitor extremely useful, too: it notifies you
whenever a program tries to register to run at start up.)

In XP (Pro at least) you can as Admin take ownership and assign rights
to individual registry keys (or whole branches),
browse this site for info:

ThNanks for your help. It looks good but is it really free? On installation
it says "day 1 of 15 day evaluation period".

That's very weird -- as he says on this link page (opposite the
downloads on that page) -- StartUp Control Panel is 100% free (although
he won't refuse a paypal tib).

I've certainly never had any kind of evaluation/pay-me type of splash
screen from either of the two utilities I've got from Mike Lin's page.

What version comes up on the "about" tab (I'm using 2.8)?

Has anybody else seen this behaviour?

I just now downloaded Startup Control Panel v2.8 from here...

It does not splash anything at all nor give any kind of indication that
there is an "evaluation period". Very strange that you're getting one. I've
used SCP before and other freeware from Mike Lin, and so far never have had
any problems. I even tried both downloads, the stand alone and the one with
an installer. Neither indicate "eval.".
