I installed DVD sofware which works fine but it starts up
when I turn on the computer and puts an icon in the task
bar. There are no options to not do this with the
software. I don't want it running all the time. Is there
anyway to stop this action on startup? Thank you. Jeff J.

Jeff, go to Start>Run type msconfig Select Startup tab Uncheck
entry with dvd software.

Click "start", then "run" and type in the letters
msconfig and hit enter. In the window that opens, click
the "startup" tab (last one to the right) and find the
name of the application that you don't want to running
as soon as you turn on your computer and >uncheck< the
box that's next to it. The next time you boot up your
system it will not start automatically. Regards
Wayne B.

That works. Thanks. Now my computer says that unless I
undo the changes, something called System Utility will
have to run on every start up. Is this okay? Will it use
up too much Ram? Thank You. Happy New Year.

Jeff;
"something called System Utility" is msconfig and it is starting in Selective Startup.
(msconfig is the System Configuration Utility)
Go back to msconfig >> Start | Run | Type: msconfig | OK
Put the check mark back on whatever you took it off of | Apply | OK
You will probably have to reboot.
After you reboot.
I know nothing about InterVideo WinDVD platinum by the way, if you had InCD
I could tell you exactly what to do.
Assuming that InterVideo started when you rebooted, right click the InterVideo icon.
Look for settings or preferences or something to that effect.
Look for Load at Startup or some thing like that and UNCHECK it.
++++++++++
If there are ABSOLUTELY no options to disable it from starting automatically.
Right click the Start button | Explore All Users
Do you see a shortcut for InterVideo there?
If so | Right click | Delete
If not.
Right click the Start button | Explore

I was going to direct you to the Registry, but this would be better.

Go here:
http://www.pt.lu/comnet/desc/startman.html
Click the StartMan v1.3.96 and download, install and run StartMan.

This link will download StartMan v1.3.96
http://www.pt.lu/comnet/files/utils/startman10396.exe

When you get StartMan, and you run it you can disable InterVideo
in about 2 seconds.
Post back with what you find , if you have any more questions or
if you want to chew me out. ;o)

Thanks Wes. I ended up using Startman. A very nice
utility. I've had some experience with using the Registry
to fix problems. If you have the time I would appreciate
having the knowledge of using the registry to fix such
problems. Hope you are having a Happy New Year. Jeff J.

Jeff;
You bet! StartMan is a GOOD Utility, I use it all the time, especially after installing software.
Everything you install wants to run at startup. StartMan shows where something starts from.
Check out the Help in StartMan also!

With Windows XP Home, There are 13 places that programs can start from and
they are executed in the following order:

Before Logon
1) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServicesOnce
2) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices

After Logon
3) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce\Setup
4) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

9) HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
10) C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
11) C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
12) HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
