I have seen in some of the other posts that during the start up the drive is
busy doing indexing, defrag, prefetch and the like. One noted that on Wed is
when the defrag runs.

My question is, How do I determine what is running and when and how to turn
it off if I don't want it. With a Duo Core 2 and 2 gigs of memory, I'm sure
some things could go, like prefetch and others could be changed to a time
that is more appropriate.

I would like to have my hard drive not bang away for the first 15-20 minutes
of my day.

Thanks

Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and choose "Start Task Manager". There you can see all
processes running. If you want to kill one, highlight it and click on the
"End Process" button. You can see other things as well...such as
Services...that might be helpful for you.

To see what it hitting the hard drive the most, you can right click the
taskbar, select "Task Manager" (or you can push Ctrl/Alt/Del) and go to the
"Performance Tab". From there, select "Resource Monitor..." on the bottom,
and then the "Disk" tab. It will show you what is hitting the disk. You also
have things that can monitor the memory, network and CPU there. A great
tool.
