Recently I have found that my computer is very slow
starting up and shutting down. I am using Windows XP Home
Edition , HP Pavillion 725n . I have tried everthing I
can think of , is there something I am missing . Maybe a
download ? I have all of the windows updates to this date.

Try looking at which programs load when you boot up. Go to the Start Menu, choose Run and type msconfig. There, go to the Startup Tab and see what type of programs are loading up. Too many programs loading when you boot up and cause Windows to perform slowly. If you see something suspicious, I would research the file on google then take the appropiate action.

at least 60 or 70 things in there . Sorry I am a novice
and I do not know what to get rid of .Can you make any
suggestions ?

You are correct to be cautious about what you disable.
