To get to seeing what starts up when Windows boots, I click "start"
then "run" then type in "msconfig" then click "OK" then at that window
I click "startup". There, I see what stuff is loading when Windows
Boots. This is not Windows components, these are all 3rd party
programs I believe. Some of the stuff is needed, but some, I know one
for sure, was identified as suspect by Norton anti-virus (suspect not
as a virus, but as a spyware program: "mxyjxxn.exe" in my Windows
folder. An Internet search gives me nothing.)

Anywho - so I see like 27 things that load up there. I can uncheck
the box in front of any of them so they won't load. So I unchecked
some I don't want loading on boot up. My computer now says I need to
reboot. OK, I reboot. But then after I reboot, a Window comes up and
says I am in a "test mode". If I reboot again everything is checked
again.

Can someone please tell me how to make unchecked boxes there in that
startup area permanent? I also - what if I delete the file
"mxyjxxn.exe". Will that startup window still have that file listed
in there? How do I get rid of it?

Totally lost...

Try unchecking everything and reboot. Also when you
reboot that same screen will re-appear, just close it.
The only thing you should leave checked is the Norton
Auto-Protect, if it's the 2004 version it's called "CCApp"

Big Mac, I've used (msconfig) to do a clean boot on
XP. Try this, Click on services tab, At the bottom check
the (hide all microsoft services) And then You may see
if the (mxyjxxn.exe) is third party or not, But You said
it was in the start-up area, so it may not show-up.
Or Try this, Open search type in ( mxyjxxn.exe ),
And check the search all file and folders box, include
hidden files and folder's, And see what folder that file
is in. This may tell You what it could be. I don't see it
on My System but that don't mean much. Norton is the best
in My OP. Scan Your system with Norton to see if it is a
Virus, or Vuaneralbility if it show's up with scan norton
can delete it for You. And last Download Spybot S&D
(search and distroy) free little program. not to complex.

Hi,

That mxyjxxn.exe is a virus (trojan most likely). Restart in Safe mode, then
remove both the file (start/search/files) and the registry entry that loads
it, likely in one of these keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Once you restart normally the entry on the startup tab should be gone. The
message you see after unchecking items and rebooting is to let you know that
you have been placed in diagnostic mode, and this is normal. If you just
check the box to not show the message again, you will not see that notice
until you make additional changes.

So Nutcase, is it my understanding then from the replies I got,
because no one said how to do it, that any box I uncheck in
msconfig\startup cannot be a permanent unchecked box ? And that it
only for diagnostic purposes? And I will have to delete the registry
entry of any of those things loaded there?

I am going to do a windows re-install soon (just got an external USB
Hard Drive to make back-up easy) and see just what I have in the
startup window after a clean re-install. Then I am going to capture a
pic of it (can't print out that window) and see just what else ends up
in there over time. I know some of it is stuff I tell to load on boot
up, but other stuff... I don't know about some of it.

Hi,

Sure you can leave something permanently unchecked, but some things have a
method of validating their entry and can reenable themselves. Trojans are
(in)famous for this. For those types of insidious things, you need to delete
the registry entries as well, otherwise not. Msconfig was originally
designed as a diagnostic tool, but has become the most frequently
recommended method of disabling startup programs. Nothing wrong with that
either.
