Is it possible to open PowerPoint 2003 without a new blank presentation
automatically opening up?

Kat0301,

You have to add /c at the end of your desktop shortcut to open PowerPoint...

The result being: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office
2003\OFFICE11\POWERPNT.EXE" /c

Command Line Switches - PowerPoint and PowerPoint Viewers
