In a word, none. Your firewall and AV should run at boot but, the OS itself
needs no other applications to function properly.

Are you sure about that?.. the OP may have some stuff in startup for good
reason.. the OP may also be looking at startup in MSCONFIG.. the OP may not
recognize the significance of removing stuff from startup.. the OP may have
been told that the pc will run much faster if items are removed from
startup.. the OP may not realize that some functionality may be lost..

Mike,

Now that you have stated what the OP may not know, what is your advice??

Fact is, on a clean install of XP, there are *NO* programs listed in
"msconfig". If you have video or sound, etc, applications that you *WANT* to
run, that is purely at your option.

In the original post, there was no mention of a clean install.. most users
ask the question having installed programs over time, filled the drives with
junk, and now looking to speed the pc up a little.. I suspect that the
poster has been told to remove stuff from 'startup' which, to the initiated,
is the file seen in MSCONFIG.. but the poster referred to the START MENU..
this suggests that the poster's knowledge is not too extensive.. the START
MENU, as we both know is what appears when the START button is activated..
removal of any such items there will have no effect.. the SYSTEM TRAY is
sometimes mistaken for the START MENU and the best way to remove unwanted
stuff from there is to right click each icon and see if there is an option
to open the program and remove the auto start facility.. done this way, the
user will not inadvertently remove something that they actually want to
run.. bringing up MSCONFIG and checking each entry so that it does not start
can lead to some important services not running.. not everybody knows that
NAV refers to anti-virus..

There is also a case for suggesting that maybe more memory is required in a
system.. again, the poster did not list system hardware.. we were not made
aware of either the poster having a system that was purchased with XP on it,
or whether the poster had installed XP on a system not originally sold as
such.. older machines benefit from increased memory, as does any machine,
but with the older ones, memory can make up for the general lack of speed
due to slow processor and bus.. XP benefits greatly from 512mb ram..

It is best to ask more questions before giving blanket advice as you did..
most non-techies assume that all computers are the same.. I suspect that the
poster does too.. that is just soooooooo not true..

Mike,

You read more into the question than was posted. My statement about a clean
install was for reference. Repeat,"the OS itself needs no other applications
to function properly."

It seems, your sole mission is to pick an argument. I bow out.

What items MUST be turned on in the start menue
I want to express my appreciation for the discussion between Jax & Mike Hall. I too had and error at bootup where windows was trying to upload a a file with strange characters. By understanding MSCONFIG loaded file at startup I was able to locate & delete the offend line from the registery, thanks agai

Well Dennis,

I'm glad this has helped someone.

Cheers, JAX

My mission is not to argue, but to point out that the straight answer to a
question is not necessarily the best answer.. in one of the other ng's, a
poster asked how to format his c drive.. he obviously wanted to clean
install XP and start over.. he had tried to format the drive from with XP
thru the 'command prompt'.. two MVP's started with 'boot from the XP cd'..
the third MVP actually told him what he was doing wrong, and then told him
to boot from cd.. a fourth person (not an MVP) gave dubious and most likely
incorrect information (info that was dependant on the pc being a clone and
not one of the mainstream makes) on how to enter BIOS and change the boot
list.. he followed this up with how to format a drive using a Win 98 boot
diskette.. there is no doubt that eventually the OP would have formatted his
drive, but then what?..

Dennis, you are in an elite group who actually understand what to look for
in MSCONFIG.. way to go.. :)

Mike,

If your mission is not to argue, why are all your posts directed at me? I
have no problems with my PC!
