My start menu is over two columns long. Is it OK to consolidate items into
folders? Example, Microsoft Office, Wordperfect Office, and Paradox could
all be in a folder called something like "Office Productivity". I would
like to get the start menu looking more organized.

Thanks!

Absolutely it's OK! It's *your* Start Menu, after all. ;-) Just
right-click on the Start Button and choose "Explore". This will give you
the familiar two-paned Explorer interface. Create new folders,
right-click/drag/copy(move) shortcuts to programs as you like.

Right click on the Start button and select "Explore All Users"
or "Open All Users".
Open the Programs folder.
Right click an open spot in the right hand pane and select
New -> Folder from the menu.
Enter an appropriate name and drag and drop the similar
programs into the new folder.

Here's an article that provides some more info.

Customize your Start Menu.

Good luck

It's not only OK, but for most people, it's a excellent way to organize it.

I guess they call this "sependipity;"
until this discussion I never knew
one could right-click on "start."
Thanks.
