My computer is recycled from my brother... I'd like to put MY name or
something else on top of the Start menu, but I don't know how... it may
involve renaming my computer, but howzat? Help!

The User Name on the Start menu is the name of the user who is currently
logged on. Create an account using YOUR name and log on with that account.

To open the User Accounts tool, open Control Panel from the Start menu, and
then double click User Accounts.

To Create a New User Account
1. Click Create a new account in the Pick a task list box.
2. Type the name that you want to use for the account, and then click Next.
3. Select the desired account type, and then click Create Account.

I created a new user account... but the original name still pops up, even
when I'm registering software, etc.! I'm old enough to remember that in
MS-DOS I could simply change the computer name at a command line; must be
something!!

Start | Run | Type: %userprofile% | Click OK

\Documents and Settings\Some Name folder should open. What's the Name?

%userprofile% is an environment variable that is the path to the logged on
user's home folder.

You can also do this.
Start | Run | Type: . | Click OK opens %userprofile%
