That's correct it is not a thing that happens very often and yes if
the server is down they cannot access resources on the server ut they
can still work locally. We also have a laptop that loses it's menu
when they are not connected.
So am I to assume by you questioning the WHY means there is not a
solution? *shurg* Just curious. I do thank you for taking the time
to get all the information and consider the problem.
Well, not sure what you can do other than changing it such that the desktops
aren't locked down quite so tightly - you're running the applications
locally, right? Can't the users just have shortcuts on their desktops to
them?
The reason I was "questioning the why" is that I was curious as to whether
you were having lots of network/server problems - if so, that's the first
thing I'd work on correcting rather than bandaiding the client machines. I
have servers all over the place that don't go down unless I take them down -
of course, this *can* happen, to anyone, but it should definitely not be a
regular occurence.
Not sure what you've locked down (are you using policies?) but I've very
rarely seen anyone redirect the start menu to a network drive. And since I
personally don't like users saving any data to the hard drives of their
local computers, I probably wouldn't want to have them working at all if I
had a major server outage that meant they couldn't get to their network
folders for data....seems likely that something will get lost. And if you've
got security such that they can't run programs without the network programs
menu, I would wonder why you'd allow them permission to save files locally
anyway....
Re the laptop - if it's meant to be used off the network as well as on,
you're going to have to modify it so that it doesn't have this limitation,
or it's pretty useless, no?
Thanks again,
Brian

I'd hope you don't have frequent problems with servers/switches
going down. They can't access their network-stored data anyway in
that event, right?

Well it's not an all the time thing but on occassion we have a
server down or a switch or something. When this happens they can't
access local programs because the menu is gone. We have the
workstations locked down pretty tight so they can only run things
through the menu.

message My first question has to be, why are users logging in "without the
network" ? Is there a real business need for this?

We are using W2k workstations with Netware servers. The start
menus are redirected to a network share on the netware server.
The problem is when people log in without the network they no
longer have a start menu at all. It just presses in and stays
pressed in. Is there a way to make the start menu available
off-line when it resides on a netware server?
Thanks,
Brian
