my music and my pictures used to get me to the OWNERS
folders for those items

now - even though i am signed on as "owner" - if i click
on them, they take me to the ALL USERS version of those
folders

how do i set it back the way it was?

thank you

Al,

This is most likely due to incorrect Shell Folder pointer in the registry.
Open Registry Editor and navigate to:

[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders]

Export the key to a REG file.

In the right-pane:
Double-click "My Music" and set the value to "%USERPROFILE%\My Documents\My
Music"
Double-click "My Pictures" and set the value to %USERPROFILE%\My
Documents\My Pictures"

Once done, logoff and login back. The Shell Folders path will be updated
automatically with reference to User Shell Folder paths.

Hi Ramesh

Thank you for your help.

I did as you instructed and now "my music" and "my
pictures" will no longer show up on my start menu.

I checked and verfied that the advanced menu is set to
display them - even changed the settings and then back
again - they won't display... so, I cannot tell if the
change worked or not

Maybe I am in trouble here! Help!

Thanks

Al

Al,

Export this key and post the contents here:

[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders]

If you're using expandable string such as "%USERPROFILE%", you need to use
REG_EXPAND_SZ rather than REG_SZ type.

Hi Ramesh

I am in way over my head on this - could not even figure
out how to copy the string to show you how it reads...
anyway, I kept at it and THEN I noticed that the string
read ALLUSER instead of USER like the rest of them in
that area did.

So - I modified to read just plain "USER", signed out and
back in again - AND - I am back the way my start menu
used to be - it worked!

Thank you very much for taking the time to help me and
for the excellent information.
