Start Menu Items Disappearing

Hi. I've had Windows XP Professional SP2 for a year or so and all of the
sudden it started clearing my start menu items after I reach about 3 items
and it won't add any until I restart Windows. I haven't installed anything
lately, since I mostly use this computer for programming. My computer hasn't
undergone any major changes lately either.
 
right click your start button and then click properties and then clcik the
start menu tab and then the customize button and in the Programs(middle)
section set the numbe of programs on the start menu. I use small icons and
15. TTFN.

I've tried doing stuff like that and it still doesn't work.
