Start Menu Customization Question

You know there's that space where the Start Menu can keep a list of
recently launched programs. Ok, well first thing is that when you
start your computer, chances are there are a few items loading on
startup - so they get shoved in there right away.

Can I use that space for something else?

For example, in my classic start menu, I used to have a few folders at
the root level of the start menu, so they appeared above "Programs" in
the upper section. That was useful for putting my most often used
items and groups.

Is there any way to keep this kind of stuff in all the valuable space
on the new Start Menu that I don't really need to keep "recenly
launched" programs in?

You can right-click on any program in that list (or anywhere in the start
menu and sub-menus) and select Pin to Start Menu from the pop-up menu. This
puts it permanently on the first tier of the Start menu for you. You can
then customize the start menu to show fewer recently used programs and use
more space for your pinned items.

Ok this is not coming up as a popup option.
Is this perhaps a feature of Plus?

Sorry about previous post. It IS coming up, but only for some items. I
suspect it has to be something that is either in All Users start menu
or just the current user. More investigation pending...

Nope, this icon is in all users just like the other one.
The only difference I can tell is it is one of my network apps.
Can a shortcut linking to a program on a network drive not be pinned?

Can I "pin" a folder (group) and have it expand right from there? It
seems bringing a folder to that location makes it a link, but it can't
expand.

Perhaps you can point me to any documentation that details all the
features of using the XP start menu.

Also, tried pinning a group (folder). It worked, except since the
group contains mostly items from ..\all users\start menu, it doesn't
display them. It seems pinning folders only opens the ones from
current user, not both.

No you can't. There is no documentation. Only fly out folders on All Programs (or classic Start) are allowed (and Quick Launch with a registry hack or if it's too small). You can reuse the other menus on the panel (eg My Music etc) but you loose the original function.

You find out the rules by reading posts by people like you.
