start menu and server 2000, changing logon name in xp pro

After a period of time, and seemingly not fired by any particular
circumstance, the display name at the top of the start menu changes to be the
login name. Sometimes this is accompanied by the loss of a net connection and
the system can not save the profile, and sometimes the profile saves ok.

This is driving us crazy as we have to keep checking to see what name is at
the top of the start menu so we can have confidence in starting networked
apps.
All machines are runing XP Pro SP2 and the server has Server 2000 and I am
just about to confirm that all the updates have been done.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I'd start with the Event log then Device Manager, DNS, WINS, etc.

Nothing tells us that it has happened, we just see a different name
eventually with no indication of how long it has been changed.

I have this happening on two servers in different domains.

I still can't figure out (from your description) what you're eluding to
here. Now you just threw us for another loop. Fist I assumed something
happening on the workstations? Now you're telling us it's a server problem?
Watching the effect as it applies to the start menu is not going to get you
anywhere. It really sounds consistent with a mis-configured DNS and or WINS
system. I'd get in touch with your systems administrator.

Dave,

The users are running XP Pro and server 2000 on both systems. There is no
connection between the two businesses, except me, and the same problem crops
up on both.

We can be working fine for hours and then we notice the username has
changed. I can't see why the displayed name should change from the Display
Name, which is shown on the workstation as soon as we logon to the server, to
the login name. There seems to be no set time after which this happens and no
event on the server log that hrelps us out.

Sounds like the work of malware.
