What is the best way to "disable" or disconnect a network setup (host XP,
client W98; USB-USB; ICS) in order to start fresh with a new setup?

If ICS is enabled on XP, disable it. If ICS is installed on W98,
un-install it. That might be all that you need to do.

If you want to remove all traces of networking from both computers and
start from scratch:

1. On W98, go to Control Panel | Network and remove all of the network
components.

2. On XP, go to Device Manager and remove the network adapters.

3. Reboot each computer and let it detect and re-install the network
adapters.

4. Re-configure the network as desired.

Thanks, Steve. One more question: in XP Device Manager should I "uninstall"
the network adapters or "disable" them in order to "remove" them? I have
never understood the difference!

You're welcome, Bob. Uninstall the network adapters, which, upon
rebooting, will cause XP to re-install their driver programs and
create new connections for them in the Network Connections Folder.
"Disable" just turns an adapter off, and you can re-enable it in
Device Manager or Network Connections.

Bob,
I had ics enabled on a client computer running widows 98. I couldn't find out how to disable ics on a windows 98
machine so I went to the router page at 192.168. etc. and went to backup and clicked on erase. Then I reconfigured my router and got a fresh start that way.
you can't have ics enabled on a client machine and a host machine at the same time, at least I couldn't.
It's odd that there are directions for disabling ICS for windows 2000, windows ME and windows XP but not tor
windows 98. I'm no expert at this, but if this helps use it.

You're right that ICS can only be enabled on one computer on a
network. If you have a router, ICS shouldn't be enabled at all, since
the router handles the Internet connection sharing.

The original version of Windows 98 doesn't have ICS. To disable ICS
in Windows 98 Second Edition, go to Control Panel | Add/Remove
Programs | Windows Setup | Internet Tools and un-check the ICS box.
