How can I specify the start folder for windows explorer, and also have it open up with the directory tree on the left pane?

Right click the icon, Select Properties.
In the TARGET field, place this in it.

%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e, c:\

Now when you open it, It will be highlighted on C:, And
expanded.
I hated the my documents view too.
good luck
