Start button does not respond, cannot start anything

My windows XP restarts, but the Start button and activity bar do not respond.
I was removing popup ad programs when it locked up and when I restarted the Start button does not respond.
I can open up my folders but cannot start programs.

Help please.
 
try using the system restore feature to get things back to the way they were. just pick a highlighted date prior to any changes you made and follow the instructions. it is easy. you will still have your original situation but the changes should be restored.
