Does anyone know where the original StarOffice Freeware version is
available?

I did have this burnt onto disk but got rid of it thinking I wouldn't use
it again, but now regret it!

Version 7 was also offered as registrationware last fall for a limited time.
I grabbed it. If you are lucky maybe it will be offered as registrationware
again. (If it wasn't for this newsgroup I would not have ever heard of the
limited time offer! Thank ACF!)

Think of StarOffice as OpenOffice with extras. StarOffice IS OpenOffice
that normally has to be paid for. Sun MicroSystems added extra things to OO
in order to make corporate buyers more comfortable with it as a viable
alternative to MS Office and WordPerfect. At less than $80, it is still a
bargain, but if you can get it for free, it's an even better bargain.

They added phone support, a database engine (not just a DB front end), extra
file conversion capabilities (ones that require licensing fees), and I
believe several secondary programs written by Sun (like the drawing
program). All the little things that require money to provide.

I got it during that time as well. Version 7 can still be downloaded free
by students and teachers at sun.com. It takes a little digging, but the
download links are there. Those who don't qualify (and don't want to lie)
can still download 5.2 to get templates to use with OOo. Maybe sun will
offer the free download again in the future.
