StarDownloader Woes

I recently installed StarDownloader so I could get a file on a poor slow
link. The first thing I noticed after installation is Stardownloader trying
to phone home (even though the auto update feature was turned off). Did
anyone else notice this same behaviour?

The other problem I had with Stardownloader was trying to download files
from Sourceforge.net. It would attempt to download the link and not the
real file! I had to keep clicking on 'Ignore this link" whenever it trid to
download a link... A real pain.

Is there anything better than StarDownloader out there?
Or will I have the same problems with other download managers?

DLExpert handles redirects.

I have such problem with both Stardownloader and Download Express
(by Metaproducts.com), when zip/exe URL does not point to real file,
but another page. I must download it by browser itself.

Thanks for the info. It sounds like DLExpert may be the ticket since it
apparently handles re-directs. (see previous post)

Download Express reacts the same way, but can be held off using the
SHIFT key when you click.

If you set a default sourceforge mirror, that may get round it for
there.

I had this problem with Star Downloader. For me the answer was just to
alter the options so it doesn't automatically cut in to download zip
files etc. Then I can either right click and chose to download with
star Downloader or do a normal click and just download in the
conventional way.

If you use Proxomitron, many of these redirect problems can be solved with
the use of a filter that gives you the direct link. That's what I do, so
even though I use Star, I'm not aware that it doesn't work with redirects.

But the best solution would be for Star to incorporate this ability into
it's program. Because, aside from that, it's a very good downloader.
