Stardown won't connect, integrate

Have just uninstalled SmartFTP after it insisted on upgrading, and
then failed twice to do so, among other problems (now left with three
questionable dlls I can't/am afraid to remove), and installed Stardown
downloader from the Priceless list.

Having read all of the help text, I set the download directory,
integration to IE on, started IE5.01, and tried to download
MandrakeMove.

Result, no amount of clicking on the URL gets Stardown to start a
download.

So, I give up on "integration" and enable monitoring clipboard. This
doesn't work either.

Finally, I copy and paste into the Stardown URL window and hit CR,
this gives me a pop-up that says "Stardown is unable to connect to
URL...", meanwhile, IE has no problem starting a download from any of
the URLs tried.

Anyone know what's wrong with my technique, or whether Stardown just
doesn't work with IE5.01?

Could it be that I have to allow IE to start the download to disk for
Stardown to work?

You are having some strange problem.
I haven't used Star downloader for some time, but I never had those kinds
of problems with it.

SD is not dependent on the IE version, so that can not be the problem.

No, that is not how it works.

Your ways of trying should have succeeded, you did right.

Maybe reinstall SD..
Or give up on SD and install Download Express instead.
Leechget is also good.

Even if you absolutely want to use SD you could install Download Express
just to see if it works, or if it also show similar problems.
It would make it easier to find out what is wrong with SD.

Have tried DLE in the past, and couldn't figure out how to control it.
It would pop up whenever I viewed a download URL in IE and start
downloading. I also found it very difficult to remove completely.
Leechget is also good.

Will give it a try, thanks.

Right click on the download exe or zip , then click on Save target as .

I now use Opera , has a built in downloader , with resume .

Practically all modern browsers have resume built in.

The big advantage of a downloader program is the ability to use more than
one thread to download a file.

I like Download Express because I can change the way it works while it is
downloading. If I start with 3 threads and think that it goes too slowly I
can change to 6 threads and DE opens up 3 new channels and starts
downloading 3 other parts of the same file.

If I want to reduce the number of threads it nicely adjusts its way of
working, keeping the downloaded parts and using actively only the number of
threads I want.

It has disadvantage of not integrating so good in Opera, but I use its
projects list program to give it new files to download.
I only use a downloader for really big files, for other files I use the
built-in downloader in the browser.

Some file servers have limited capacity and do not like people who use more
than one thread, it locks out other customers, so be careful with using
more threads. On big university servers it is no problem, you can use
several threads to maximise the download speed.

3 threads is usually a good number, more than 7 is usually meaningless and
is just blocking download channels for other users.
