There was a thread posted about burners. You can get the NEC 16x dual
format , double layer -- one of the most popular and better burners
for 50-70 at NEC.

Says with software but I have no idea what software. Im assuming that
means burning software.

Looks like software is Roxio Basic (OEM) v7.xxxxxxx.
Rather have Nero but that NEC is generally regarded as a
better drive than the I/O Magic even if it were same price.
Some claim it rips DVDs a bit slow though, but IMO the DVD
burning should be priority 1 for a, umm, DVD burner.

In the older NECs there was always hacked firmware that let you rip at
faster speeds since the NECs were locked down to a max speed. I saw a
psot that claimed they have one for the 16x now . I dont really care
that much about gettng faster ripping speeds so I kept mine 4x or so
which is the 8x model.

They are selling NERO retail at Compusa I think this week (I maybe
mistaken) for $30. Ive also seen it on ebay for $5.99
but....................... who knows what that is though they claim
its NOT the OEM version and that its "authentic".

I cant remember the threads but I think they said the IO Magic
recently was an Aopen and something else - two brands stuffed in the
box . And one of them wasnt that hot while the other was OK , not
great.

Id personally prefer the NEC or maybe try the BenQ which posters are
claiming as a decent burner which is selling at Newegg with some
software if it comes with NERO.

The IO Magics are either a BenQ 1620 or a BTC. I got the BenQ and
knock on wood, it's been a great burner.

The Benqs seem ok from the feedback. However the maddogs (NEC) have
been on sale recently several times at around 49-59 after rebates
though that was several weeks ago. It also involves rebates.

The BenQ aren't too bad but BTC- yuck!

Newegg has some really good pricing on the NECs, hard to get
much lower even with a rebate excepting that their free or
$1 shipping offer ended yesterday IIRC.
