Standyby Fails

For no particular reason, my computer (WinXP Home) suddenly won't stay in
standby mode. When I give it the command (Start| Turn Off| Standby), it
shuts off as expected. But about five seconds later it wakes itself up.

I used to have this problem which back then was caused by a flawed HP
printer driver. I'd get a message to the effect that this driver was
preventing Standby. If I shut off the printer before giving the standby
command, the computer would stay shut off. Subsequently, HP updated and
fixed the driver.

The problem now occurs with no external drives nor printer turned on.

Please advise.
 
Hi,
What programs/processes are always running? Take a look in the Notification
Area.

Next go to Start> Run> (type in) msconfig> Startup tab. Look for unnecessary
startup items/programs. Research unknown programs via your favorite search
engine. Uncheck an item or two. Restart. See if the problem is resolved.

Usually by the manual of the hardware.
What a real shame is however, nowadays we don't get these manuals when we
buy our hardware like we used to.
Sometimes the 'manual' is a mere 'quickstart' sheet of paper of pdf file
on some cd, if you get any cds with the system at all.
The last real manual I received with hardware came with an Asus P4P
mainboard 3 years ago.
People buying OEM bundled pc's and laptops get none of that.

As a side note, 'WOL' or Wake On LAN if you will, is usually turned off
by default on all mainboards, even in the case of pci cards that use a
small 3 wire cable attached (the 'old' way) to the mainboard's WOL port.
Out of the 675 computers I have worked with and replaced over the past 5
years, only two had WOL enabled; these machines sit on my own desk.
 
In the last 2 years 4 people on news groups have thanked me for solving
their problem of computer waking up.
 
I'm sure they do. Was merely pointing out something that could have been
obvious, but due to evolution in the industry has become a not-so-common
bit of knowledge. That is why we need to pass on our knowledge. :)

I too have a balky standby, have posted under identical subject line and
received little help. Good luck with this group. Post if you find a solution
independently. My standby sometimes pops out into active mode in a few
moments, or after several minutes, or even as long a time as an hour.
Mystifyingly, it stays in standby after I again comand standby following an
inactive period.

The link to MS search, given in an earlier response, gives you 200 +
entries. Good luck with that.

I turn off or exit security alerts, automatic A/V downloads, firewall, time
synchronizer, mobo monitor, whatever else might try to goose the box into a
excited state. Also put cable modem on standby - that alone usually doesn't
do the whole job of isolating 'puter from traffic - I have to disable local
internet connection. Finally, check computer after several minutes to see
if it holds, then again intermitently so that monitor will last more than a
few weeks. Doesn't anyone take pity on the new or recently begun users?

In device manager right click on items such as modems select properties and
check under tab 'power management'.
 
All OK there, unknown. by default. Good guess, though. Think I'll stop
whining and just turn off, for the hour or two I may be away from computer.
Fingers crossed, OFF still works.

Why not try crippling the ability of the mouse to allow coming out of
standby.
Then try crippling keyboard.
Anything in schedules???(scheduled event)
