I have a compaq s4000t running windows xp. My standby
setting is set for 15 minutes. It goes into standby mode
successfully but after less than ten seconds it wakes up.
Is there a setting I can change to keep it in standby
mode?

Several possiblities. One is that a program is phoning out, either
spyware or something you installed that attempts to update itself.
(Try ad-aware for spyware.) Another is that you put the computer on
standby and leave the mouse on a hard surface - you get up, the minor
vibrations cause the mouse to awaken the PC. I leave mine on a piece
of foam and go into standby via the keyboard.

Last, many standby problems are cured by reinstalling video drivers. A
good idea to check that they are up to date and designated for XP.
