Standby Won't Engage

Until recently, I've had no problem. Suddenly, the system won't go on standby. The screen engages and gives me the message that it is, "preparing to standby" and just locks up there. I must manually shut down the system. I have uninstalled those programs which I think may have caused the problem; still, the problem remains.
