Fred

I have installed xp pro. upon shutdown, the standby
option is grayed out. shutdown goes through the usual
blue screens of log off, saving settings and shutting
down, and then it does the Windows 98 thing by showing the
screen "It is now safe to turn off computer". The OS
doesn't turn off machine.

Hi Fred,

Control Panel/Power Options, you may need to enable APM. Also make sure
power management in the system BIOS is disabled.

A probable cause is that your installation found the BIOS does not
adequately support the 'Advanced Configuration & Power Interface'
(ACPI). It then installs the older APM, but leaves it disabled. Go to
Control Panel - Power Options, and if there is an APM page, check
'Enable APM' on it.
