Standby problem

I wonder whether you might advise me re a home computing
issue.
On one of our home computers, I run Windows XP Home
edition on a Pentium 4 processor.
Yesterday, I was removing programs that one of my kids had
installed and that were cluttering up the system and
causing, I think, to get a bit of adware pop-ups. One of
these was Xupiter or something like that which, I think,
had something to do with regulating the Explorer toolbar.
Another warned me about, I think, the VGA monitor might be
affected and that I would have to reset this manually.
In any event, I now have a few problems. One of these is
that when I use the browser, the screen flutters slightly,
ie. the screen just quite catch up to the action of the
scroll cursors or mouse. This has an annoying wave-like
effect. The other problem is that I can no longer use the
STANDBY feature. The icon is there, but the background
screen is greyish, but no caption explanation appears
about the standby feature and nothing happens when you
click it.
Everything else appears to be okay. I don't think I
removed any parts of the Windows software, but it's
possible I may have done it inadvertently.
Any ideas how I can resolve these issues?
Regards,
Stan

P.S. Can you also advise about the best adware removal
programs?

hiya
i'm not too sure bout the standby problem unless your
system is running very low on virtual memory although xp
would warn you about this. The screen flutter - go to
display properties, settings - make sure the resolution
is either 800x600 or higher (preferably 800x600 on a 15
inch monitor and 1024x768 on a 17inch monitor) and also
make sure the colour quality is set to Highest (32 bit.
This should solve the screen flutter.
Wait for another reply about the standby issue but in the
mean time the best adware prevention/removal tools are:

Ad-aware (www.lavasoft.nu) free program for removal of
spyware/adware (can crash in certain cases especially if
trying to delete bonzi buddy) if usuing this preogram be
sure to delete the auto quarantine after each system scan

Spybot search and destroy (google search) free program
will be able to remove anything adaware can't in most
cases - ignore the windows media player alerts, they are
not spyware.

Spyware Blaster (www.javacoolsoftware.com) free program
which will prevent browser related spyware even being
installed without your knowledge. It works by blocking
all spyware/adware cookies in internet explorer settings,
a very useful and reliable program.

Be sure to update or check for updates on all programs
before use.

Chris

Hiya

I think i have had the same sort of problem with my comp
regarding the stand by but mine was when i had to run a
fresh install of win xp... Might be worth trying this
though if you can!! Everything loaded up ok with my comp
apart from the standby button on the shut down screen,The
next bit is why i said if you can.I built my system
myself and therefore have the mother board disc. If you
have this try running it and hopefully this will sort
your standby button problem and maybe 1 or 2 of the other
niggles.. If you havent got a motherboard disc try and
find the make and model No of your mother board and visit
their site for the drivers

Hope this is of some use
