If I leave my computer sit for a while, the following
message pops up: "The device driver for the Toshiba
Software modem device is preventing the machine from
entering standby. If problem persists, you may need to
update driver."
The problem does persist, and each time this message
appears, my mouse quits functioning and I have to log off
and on again to get it to work.
Solutions?

The problem is the driver for the modem, you need to check the Toshiba site
or the modem manufacturer's site for an updated that may correct the issue.
If it doesn't, Standby is not supported by that device and will always cause
this problem. You can either remove the device, replace the device with one
that does support it or not use standby.

you can also disable the device in device manager. this will prevent the
driver from loading, especially useful if the model is an embedded device
you cannot remove. of course, once disabled, you cannot use the device to
dial out (you must reenable it first).
