Remember that Standby keeps the computer turned on; Hibernate turns it off
and saves to disk. No limit on how long. I prefer the latter if things are
going to be unattended very long.
Being an old Windows 9x user, I shut down daily. May or may not apply with
XP, but with other, this allowed for necessary "housecleaning".
Same principal applies. The other mitigating factor is that in standby the
system is still just as vulnerable to a power failure or flux as when
running.
