I have just built a new computer with XP Pro on it. When
the system enters Standby mode the machine goes into a
black hole. Everything is still powered up but the screen
is blank. The only way to regain control is to power down
and power back up. Any suggestions? Thanks. (The
motherboard company says it's a Windows problem).

Depends. Windows does not work well with its energy-saving features
with all hardware. You can try using Hibernation instead and also you
should get the latest drivers for all hardware components. If it does
not work then you should not use the Standby/Hibernation modes. You
should be able to use energy-saving features for to turn off just the
monitor after a certain amount of idle-time, however.

Update your video card's drivers.
